Frequently Asked Questions

How accurate are the numbers? Why is the trade-in price lower than the market value? How do you handle limited-edition or one-off skis? The most common questions, answered honestly.

How accurate are Ski Blue Book valuations?

Our strongest valuations are built from real comparable sales: eBay sold listings and SidelineSwap completed sales. When recent comps are sparse, we label the number as an estimate and blend in depreciation math. Accuracy is highest for popular all-mountain models from the last 3 to 5 years.

Why does my gear value vary by region?

Different parts of the country want different gear. A 110mm-waist powder ski sells for noticeably more in the Mountain West than the Midwest. A narrow carving ski with metal layers sells for more in the Northeast. The buyer pool sets the price, and the buyer pool is regional.

What is the difference between market value and trade-in value?

Market value is what your gear sells for in a private sale (Facebook Marketplace, SidelineSwap, ski swaps, eBay). Trade-in is what a shop offers walking in the door — typically 30 to 45 percent of market value because the shop takes inventory risk and does the listing work.

Why is the trade-in value sometimes capped at $200?

We deliberately cap trade-in valuations at $200 per item until we have enough validated trade-in outcomes to confidently quote higher numbers. Quoting an inflated trade-in number that no shop will actually pay is worse than quoting a low one.

Why does my ski not appear in the search?

We currently cover 500+ ski models (800+ across skis, bindings, and boots). If your ski is not in our database, it is most likely a very new release, an older model we deprioritized, or a small-brand ski with too few comparable sales for confident valuation. We add models continuously.

How often is the data updated?

Comparable sales data is pulled and refreshed continuously. Pricing models are recomputed nightly. Seasonal multipliers update monthly. New models are added on a rolling basis as they reach the resale market in meaningful volume.
